Answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
Welcome! We are glad you found this platform, and that you are interested in pursuing your study of yoga in more depth.
We have several online courses set up for you to begin, or to continue, your exploration of yoga history, philosophy, and the Sanskrit language.
You might like to begin with a FREE Lecture on the visual history of Āsana.
Or, we recommend starting out with our YS 101: Intro Course, which is an in-depth exploration of the historical development of yoga from antiquity to the contemporary period.
Or, if you have a bit more experience already, and/or are seeking to dive into classical yoga philosophy, then you may like to begin with YS 201: Classical Yoga, which is an in-depth textual study of the Yogasūtra of Patañjali.
Or, if you've always wanted to begin learning Sanskrit, or simply brush up on your pronunciation of all those Āsana names, then you might like to begin with SKT 101: Sanskrit for Yogis.
At the moment, the founder and director of Yogic Studies, Seth Powell, is the lead faculty for YS 101, YS 201, and SKT 101. However, in the coming months there will be more guest faculty added, with new course offerings from world-renowned scholars of yoga. Stay tuned!
With all of our courses, there are no prerequisites for study. For example, you do not need to take YS 101 before you take YS 201. However, our 100-level courses should be understand as more introductory, while our 200-level courses are typically a bit more challenging.
All of our courses, however, attempt to make the more challenging, esoteric, and complex topics of yoga more accessible and engaging to all.
With each of our courses, we first launch them in a "live" version. This consists of weekly live lectures and/or Q&A sessions conducted on the Zoom web platform. All of these materials are recorded, however, for later viewing and re-viewing. For the "live" version we encourage students to follow along each week, to keep up with the pace of the course, and participate in group discussions.
After the "live" version, we open the course up for "self-study." This means that anyone can sign up and take the course entirely at your own pace and schedule. However, we also realize that for many people this is not possible, or desirable. And that is okay too! Again, all of the materials are recorded, and all students will have continued access to the course.
How does lifetime access sound?! For all Yogic Studies courses (whether purchased as "live" or "self-study" models), you will have unending (ananta) access to the course and all of its materials—for as long as the Yogic Studies platform exists!
We don't anticipate the dissolution (pralaya) of Yogic Studies anytime soon. So take a deep breath, and know that you can truly take your time, moving through the course and its modules entirely at your own pace.
Each course is slightly different, and so we encourage you to read carefully the descriptions for each course, so that you know exactly what you are getting.
However, most of the course modules include: core lectures (video of instructor speaking over slides), audio recordings, PDF handouts, PDF translations/workbook, fun quizzes to reinforce your knowledge as you go, and recorded live Q&A sessions.
There are also BONUSES included to enhance your study, and that are unique to each course.
All of our courses have been carefully curated and developed with great care, attention to detail, and arise out of many years of rigorous study and dedicated teaching.
Once you've enrolled for a course, you will be able to stream the video lectures directly from the Yogic Studies web platform. All you will need then to participate in a course, is a descent internet connection.
You also have the ability to download the lectures on to your desktop or device! Within the course Modules, you will find a download video button. Simply click this (or sometimes a right-click, "save file as" is needed) to download the video file.
For "live" courses, we will also be using the Zoom web platform for live streaming sessions. Once enrolled, a unique link will be provided for such occasions, where you will be prompted to install the free Zoom app on your device.
For each "live" course there will be a pop-up online Community forum, which is hosted on the Yogic Studies platform. This will be an invaluable space to communicate, inquire, discuss, and collaborate with a truly international cohort of students from around the world!
All Yogic Studies students will also have access to a private Facebook group set up for alumna from all of our courses. This is a special online group dedicated to continuing discussions after the "live" course ends.

Yes, absolutely! All of our Yogic Studies online courses can make a powerful add-on to an existing 200, 300, 500, etc. hour Yoga Teacher Training.
We currently offer a discounted group rate especially for YTT programs.
If you are a studio owner or teacher-trainer and would like to discuss how we can best integrate these courses into your program, please contact us at [email protected].
We try to price our online courses as fairly as possible, while finding a balance between the quality and value of the course materials, the lifetime access and support you will get with enrollment, and the current industry market of yoga trainings, online education, etc.
That said, we know everyone's financial situations are different, especially in a global economy. At the end of the day, we want those who truly want to study and learn yoga vidyā in a serious manner, to have access to these teachings.
If you would like to be considered for a scholarship for one of our courses, please feel free to contact us to explain your current situation and interest in Yogic Studies.
