Sanskrit

Sanskrit is the ancient and classical language of South Asia. From Devanāgarī to the Bhagavadgītā, progress through our flagship series of courses in Classical, Epic, Vedic, and Modern Spoken Sanskrit. Read the great texts and genres of the Sanskrit tradition, including: epic, grammar (vyākaraṇa), narrative (kathā), philosophy (śāstra), and poetry (kāvya).

Pali

Pali is the language of the oldest surviving Buddhist canon—the Tipiṭaka— comprising the discourses of the Buddha, the monastic code, and a rich commentarial tradition. Our Pali curriculum develops reading fluency and focuses on quickly developing your ability to read Buddhist sutta literature in the original language.

Hindi

Hindi is the most widely spoken language of South Asia and is an Indo-Aryan language derived from Sanskrit. Our courses ground students in the Devanāgarī script and foundational grammar, developing students’ linguistic (grammar and vocabulary), communicative (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), and cultural competence.

Tibetan

Classical Tibetan is the vehicle for an enormous corpus of Vajrayāna Buddhist literature: translations of Sanskrit texts, doctrinal treatises, tantric sādhanas, medical texts, biographies of great masters, and more. Our courses teach the Tibetan script, Wylie system of transliteration, and grammar, building toward independent reading of Buddhist texts. They emphasize a focus on building dharma vocabulary and cultural competence.

Latin

A classical Indo-European language, our series in Latin is aimed at anyone with some prior ancient-language skills: whether you already know some Sanskrit, some Greek, or have other more general experience with language learning or comparative/Indo-European philology. Students begin with "Latin for Sanskritists" and progress to the writings of Ovid and Seneca.

Greek

A classical Indo-European language, our series in Ancient Greek (i.e. Classical Literary Attic) is aimed at anyone with some prior ancient-language skills: whether you already know some Sanskrit, some Latin, or have other more general experience with language learning or comparative/Indo-European philology. Students begin with "Greek for Sanskritists" and progress to reading Plato and Sophocles.
