Pali is the classical Middle Indo-Aryan language of Theravāda Buddhism—the language of the oldest surviving Buddhist canon, the Tipiṭaka, comprising the discourses of the Buddha, the monastic code, and a rich commentarial tradition. A Prakrit relative of Sanskrit, carried for more than two millennia across Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, Pali remains a living language of recitation, scholarship, and commentary. It is the medium in which the earliest teachings of the Buddha have been preserved, chanted, and interpreted down to the present day.
