Join Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, and a global cohort of students, for this unique opportunity to study and receive world-class training in modern Hindi—from the comfort of your own home.
This is the first of a three-term sequence of Elementary Hindi with Dr. Rajiv Ranjan. The focus of the course is to develop students’ linguistic (grammar and vocabulary), communicative (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), and cultural competence. The course will follow Dr. Ranjan's online textbook, Basic Hindi 1.
HINDI 101 aims to develop students’ proficiency up to the novice high or intermediate low level of the American Council on the Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scale. The pedagogical approach of this course will be primarily communicative, however, we will adopt various techniques to meet the learning styles of the students in a unique online learning environment.
By the end of the first term, students will have the foundational skills to read and write in basic Hindi, and to handle interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of language communication along with cultural appropriateness in Hindi.
HINDI 101 will provide strong foundation for those wishing to continue their study of the language, travel and communicate in India, begin translation work, engage with Hindi-language films, and more!
There will be weekly written homework, optional quizzes to test yourself, as well as a mid-term and a final.
The grading will be such that anyone who puts a regular solid effort into the weekly homework will pass; those aiming for a B or an A will also need to perform accordingly on the two exams.

No! Students are not expected to have any background knowledge prior to study. That said, having some background study can only help, especially having some experience already with the Devanāgarī script.
For this we recommend our SKT 100a | The Devanāgarī Seminar course as excellent for preparation. Students who register for HINDI 101 will receive a discount coupon for registering for SKT 100a.
Not to worry! All live sessions will be recorded and posted to the course website within 12 hours. Students will have lifetime access to them.
So while live attendance is strongly encouraged to get the most out of the course, you can still participate by watching the recordings.
You are also encouraged to participate in the online Community forum, and have the opportunity to send questions in ahead of time, especially if you cannot attend live.
No not necessarily. You are welcome to only register for a single course and see if the program is right for you, before committing to the full 9-month curriculum.
For this course we will be using the online textbook Basic Hindi 1 written by our instructor, Dr. Rajiv Ranjan.
This is a free and open-access textbook that is available online and students will also be provided with a PDF. Additional resources and materials will also be provided.
Dr. Ranjan will be utilizing a variety of pedagogical approaches to make Hindi learning fun and tangible for online students.
Each week students will watch short lecture videos and complete exercises on their own.
We will then gather twice a week on Zoom to discuss the grammatical material, go over questions, and further examples together. As Hindi is a modern and spoken language, there will also be a strong speaking/listening component.
Unfortunately, the HINDI courses are NOT included in the YS Membership Program. The reason behind this is we need to open/close enrollment at set dates and create unique Hindi language cohorts to better serve the learning environment for both instructor and students.
