YS 140 | Sacred Architecture of the Deccan
Instructor: Dr. George Michell
Dates: Sept 28Â - Oct 23, 2026
Meetings: Fri 10-11:30am PDT
Course Description
Study directly with one of the world's leading authorities on Indian sacred architecture—exploring 1,500 years of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments across the Deccan plateau.
The Deccan—the great interior plateau of peninsular India, fringed by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east—is home to some of the most astonishing sacred monuments on earth. Carved by Buddhist monks into living rock, raised by Hindu kings in red sandstone, crowned by Jain colossi atop granite hills, and expanded by emperors into stone cities of staggering scale, these structures span more than fifteen centuries of artistic ambition and religious devotion.
In this four-week live course, Dr. George Michell—archaeologist, art historian, and one of the world's foremost authorities on South Asian architecture—leads students through four defining moments in this tradition: the Buddhist cave monasteries of Maharashtra, the Early Chalukya temples of Karnataka, the Jain pilgrimage sanctuaries of the south, and the imperial Hindu temples of Vijayanagara. Each session pairs close attention to individual monuments with the broader historical and religious contexts that produced them.
No prior knowledge of Indian art, history, or religion is required. The course is designed for anyone curious about sacred space, architectural history, or the civilizations of India.
