This unique Yogasūtras immersion will offer students a special opportunity to engage in both practice and study, surrounded by a supportive and inquisitive community of like-minded students from around the world.

Join Yogic Studies founder Dr. Seth Powell and special guest yoga teacher Moritz Ulrich. Over the course of five nights and six days, we will immerse in yoga history and philosophy, study and chant Sanskrit, practice yoga and meditation, eat delicious local vegetarian Greek cuisine, visit an ancient temple of a Greek goddess, relax poolside, swim and enjoy the picturesque waters of the Saronic Gulf, and more!

Location

We will be staying at the picturesque LaLi Bay Resort and Spa, a luxury hotel on the island of Aegina, only 45 minutes by ferry boat from the port of Piraeus near Athens.

LaLi Bay is nestled along the sea in the Saronic Gulf with a breathtaking sunset view, surrounded by nature and steeped in stillness—the perfect locale for yoga practice and philosophical inquiry. You can wake up with the sound of the waves, watch the sunrise above the mainland, and begin or end your day with a lovely walk or swim in the sea along our private beach.

Aegina is a favorite island getaway destination for local Athenians because of its easy access, rich history, old-world charm, beautiful beaches, and delicious pistachios.

The island is also host to the ancient temple of Aphaia, a local Greek goddess, whose temple dates back over 2,500 years and whose architecture influenced the more well-known Acropolis in Athens. We will take a field trip and have a private guided tour of this incredible historic site.

Facilities

All participants will have access to LaLi Bay's private pools, beach, hot tub, hiking trails, and spa facilities. We have included time for you in the daily schedule for you to enjoy the beautiful grounds, beach, or to book a massage at the spa according to your preferences. Please note that there may be other guests staying at the hotel.

Accomodation

LaLi Bay offers a range of accommodation options including private and shared rooms. Participants are responsible for booking accommodation directly with LaLi Bay, on a first come first serve basis. Click here to view the available accommodations and to book using our reduced group rate.

Food

LaLi Bay will be providing us with three delicious meals per day. Under the guidance of their esteemed chef, Kavos Restaurant presents an innovative menu that blends traditional Greek techniques with modern twists, using only the freshest, locally-sourced ingredients.

Our retreat menu will be lacto-ovo vegetarian. Coffee will be available daily ;)

LaLi Bay is also happy to provide alternative menu options for vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free needs. Please let us know ahead of time if you have specific dietary requests, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Please note that the breakfast meals may be shared with other guests staying at the resort and so meat may be present. We kindly request that our participants please commit to a vegetarian diet during the course of the retreat.

Instructors

Dr. Seth Powell

Founder & Director, Yogic Studies

Seth Powell is a scholar of Indian religions, Sanskrit, and yoga traditions, who earned his PhD in South Asian Religions at Harvard University. His dissertation comprised a critical edition, translation, and detailed study of a 15th-century Sanskrit yoga text from south India known as the Śivayogapradīpikā—which uniquely combines yoga, ritual, and devotion. He also works extensively on the visual and material culture of yoga in premodern India, uncovering yoga's past through temple sculptures.

As an educator, Seth is passionate about sharing the latest academic research on yoga's vast history and philosophies and is gifted in his ability to present the ancient teachings of yoga clearly in an accessible, light-hearted, and inspiring manner—while maintaining a rigor and sensitivity to traditional Indian knowledge systems. He founded Yogic Studies in 2018 as a way to bridge academia with the broader yoga world. He has been studying and teaching the Yogasūtras of Patañjali for over twenty years.
